Annual Hundred Drums Festival gets underway at Asanang

TURA, Nov 8: The beat of drums or “dama” as it is called in Garo, reverberated in the air today as the annual Hundred Drums Wangala Festival got underway here at Asananggre, 18 kms from Tura, the District headquarters of West Garo Hills. It may be noted that  the Wangala is the most significant post harvest festival of the Garos during which rituals are performed and offerings given to Misi Saljong also known as ‘Patigipa Ra’rongipa’ (The great giver) for having blessed the people with a rich harvest.
Ten Wangala troupes from various parts of Garo Hills which make up the Hundred Drums Wangala dancers, as well as a team from Bangladesh, arrived here in the forenoon dressed in their traditional finery and carrying their drums, gongs, horns and other traditional instruments to participate in the three-day festival. During the afternoon they converged at the venue and rehearsed to synchronise their drum beats and dance steps for the grand finale.

 Three-day Dist Level Industrial Exhibition underway TURA, Nov 8: The three-day District level Industrial Exhibition organized by the district Commerce and Industries Centre at Asananggre was today inaugurated by Nokma Council President, Skylance G Momin. The exhibition is being held in order to showcase merchandise and produces of entrepreneurs and provide marketing accessibility through exposure. The exhibition coincides with the 100 Drums Wangala Festival and will conclude on 10th November 2012.  This year’s industrial exhibition lays emphasis on handicrafts and food processing informed DCIC officials.  
About fifty stalls displaying handloom and handicraft items, food products and art work amongst others were put up by entrepreneurs from all over Garo Hills including Khasi Hills.
Addressing the gathering Momin urged fellow Nokmas to give their full support and cooperation wherever the department will be setting up industrial training centers so that the local people can benefit from them. Laying special emphasis on skill development and grooming of entrepreneurs Momin urged the officials to facilitate such programmes in the future.
Among others who attended the inauguration were Local MDC, L Ch Momin, former DCIC Director D K Arengh and 100 DrumsWangala organizing Committee President L K Marak.
